Yes, Texas has a gator season.

Rules split the state into 'core' coastal counties and everywhere else.

Where

Core counties along the Gulf Coast, plus all other counties under separate rules.

Daily / season limit

Non-core counties: 1 alligator per person, per year, on private land with the owner's permission.

  • Core counties (22, mostly Gulf Coast) Sept. 10-30, 2026
  • All other (non-core) counties Apr. 1 - June 30, 2027

General Hunting License plus the proper tags.

Quirks & things to watch

  • Non-core tagging: when you take a gator, attach a temporary Wildlife Resource Document. Within 72 hours, mail in the hide tag report (form PWD 304A) with a $21 fee, and TPWD mails you a permanent CITES tag for near the tail.
  • You may not take a gator with a firearm from, on, or over public water.
  • In core counties, TPWD issues tags ahead of time.
