Who Sets Your Property Value in Wise County
Your property tax actually passes through two different offices in Wise County, and people mix them up all the time. The Wise County Appraisal District, on E. Business 380 in Decatur, puts a value on every taxable piece of property. The Tax Assessor-Collector, a few blocks away on W. Walnut Street, is the office that mails the bill and takes your money. Different buildings, different jobs.
That split matters most when you think your value is too high. You don't argue with the tax office about the number — you protest with the appraisal district, the folks who set it. The ordinary deadline is May 15 or 30 days after the appraisal district mails the notice, whichever is later. If you've got a homestead and the value jumped, file a timely protest with evidence of the correct value. Late protests and correction motions have separate, limited rules.
