Vernon's Murals Pair Roy Orbison With Tamales, Hibiscus, and Bacon

At Main and Olive, a mural welcomes people with Roy Orbison, who was born in Vernon. Across the street, another honors Robert Brown and the Texas A&M AgriLife hibiscus breeding work done in Vernon. Selena Mize painted both walls.

A third mural remembers Harvey Dean. He was an African American entrepreneur who sold tamales at Wilbarger and Main to put his children through college. Ferdine Le Blanc painted the mural.

Then there is bacon. Aaron Soto painted the Greetings from Bacon City mural in 2022 for Wright Brand's 100th anniversary. It turned a business milestone into another piece of downtown memory.

The subjects do not follow one polished theme, and that is their charm. Within a few blocks, Vernon keeps a hometown singer, local flower research, a father's tamale sales, and a century-old bacon company on the walls.
