Most McLennan County Vehicles Skip the Inspection Step

Since January 1, 2025, most personal cars in McLennan County have needed no state safety check or smog test. The county is not in the Texas smog-test program. Work trucks and other commercial vehicles are different. They still need a safety check.

Texas adds a $7.50 fee to a standard one-year registration for a personal car. The McLennan County Tax Office handles tags, titles, and disabled parking placards at 215 N. 5th Street in Waco. Some drivers can renew online through TxDMV.
