Vehicle Registration
No Inspection Sticker Needed to Register Your Car in Medina County
The old yearly ritual of passing a safety inspection before you could renew your tags is gone for personal vehicles. As of January 1, 2025, Texas dropped the pre-registration safety inspection statewide. You'll see a small inspection-program replacement fee folded into registration instead, but no more trip to a station first. The Medina County tax office confirms it for local drivers: renew your personal registration without an inspection.
Emissions testing is a separate program, and it only applies in seventeen mostly big-metro counties. Places like Bexar's neighbors Travis and Comal aren't even all on it. Medina isn't among them. So unlike a commuter registering in Dallas or Harris County, a Medina County resident skips emissions entirely.
Two things still hold. Commercial vehicles keep their inspection requirement no matter where they're registered. And the title-and-registration work itself runs through the county tax office, with windows in Hondo, Devine, and Castroville for renewals, address changes, and the rest.
