Upland Island Keeps a Rougher Forest Pocket Near Lufkin

Upland Island does not call attention to itself from the highway. It is part of Angelina National Forest, along with Turkey Hill Wilderness. From Lufkin, the Forest Service route goes south on Highway 69, then east on Forest Road 314 to the parking area.

This is a different kind of public land. Wilderness areas are managed for natural processes, solitude, and challenge. That means fewer built features and more responsibility on the visitor.

The Forest Service ethics are simple: take trash home, use existing paths, camp away from trails and water, leave plants and historic items in place, and be careful with fire. The point is not a big attraction sign. It is a quieter woods experience near the busy lake-and-highway side of Angelina County.
