Cuero's Turkey Story Went From Trot to Ruby Begonia

Cuero's Turkey Trot began in 1912. The name was literal enough. The celebration grew from the town's turkey-producing past, and early events included flocks moving through the streets with the parade crowd. Handlers moved turkey flocks between parade floats, making the street itself part of the show.

In 1973, the old Turkey Trot became TurkeyFest. The newer festival kept that farm memory but gave it a comic lead: Cuero's racing turkey, Ruby Begonia. A bird with a flower-box name now carries a tradition that started with working flocks and a parade.

The old event presented many birds as local business. The modern race asks one named bird to stand for the whole story. Cuero did not leave the turkey identity behind when the celebration changed. It gave the story one bird and one name.

Ruby Begonia is funny because the history underneath her is real. The name, race, and festival turn an old poultry trade into civic theater. Cuero gets to remember the farm work without sounding like an agricultural ledger.
