Scenic Mountain Makes Big Spring State Park Feel Like a Lookout

Scenic Mountain changes the feel of Big Spring fast. One minute you are in town; the next you are climbing toward a bluff where the land opens out in long, dry layers. The park covers 382 acres, and its top view comes from a 200-foot bluff over arid plains terrain. The elevation is listed at 2,810 feet, high enough to make even a compact state park feel wide open.

That is why the park works even for a short walk. The paved three-mile loop road winds up and around the mountain, then drops back toward the entrance. A five-mile hike-and-bike trail starts and ends near the park entrance, and the shorter two-thirds-mile nature trail climbs past cactus and other desert plants. It is not a deep-woods park. It is a Howard County overlook, close to Big Spring but high enough to make the city and plains read together.

The bluff turns a compact day-use park into a quick lesson in the scale of the plains. Big Spring stays close below, while the dry horizon does the work of making 382 acres feel much larger.
