Rosebud Got Its Name Because Mullins Was Taken

Before there was a Rosebud, the settlement by Pond Creek had several names. People called it Pool's Crossing and Greer's Horsepen. In 1884, its post office took the name Mormon. Fire destroyed the settlement in 1887.

Allin Taylor became postmaster and moved the mail to his home. He wanted the name Mullins to honor a local family known for its roses. Another Texas community already had that name. The post office became Rosebud on April 23, 1887.

In 1889, the Texas Townsite Company began building a town around the new name. The San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway reached Rosebud by 1892 on its line from Waco to Giddings. Rosebud incorporated on November 7, 1905.

Blackland cotton later kept seven gins and a cottonseed mill busy. A newspaper editor started a tradition of planting a rosebush in every yard. A postal fallback had become the town's theme.
