A Stage Road Runs Along Purtis Creek's South Edge

An old travel route runs along the south edge of Purtis Creek State Park. The Tyler to Porter's Bluff Road once carried stage traffic from East Texas toward the Trinity River. That road belongs to the same local corridor that passed near Edom long before a state park lake appeared.

The park itself covers 1,582.4 acres in both Henderson and Van Zandt counties. Its Eustace mailing address can hide the county line, but the Van Zandt connection is part of the official park boundary. Texas acquired the land from private owners in 1977 and opened the park in 1988. A 355-acre lake now anchors the interior. Wolfpen Hike and Bike Trail makes a 4.1-mile loop through the woods. Beaver Slide Nature Path follows 1.7 miles of lakeshore, while the short Solar Trail crosses the dam area.

The water stays deliberately slow. TPWD allows no more than 50 motorized boats at once, all at idle speed under a no-wake rule. Purtis Creek holds two kinds of movement in one landscape: an old stage road along its edge and quiet boats inside it.
