Property Tax: Two Offices, One County

Your property tax in Jim Hogg County passes through two doors a few blocks apart in Hebbronville. The value on your home or land gets set on W. Viggie St., at the Jim Hogg County Appraisal District. That is its own office, not part of county government, and it is where a homestead exemption gets filed or an appraised value gets protested. Find them online at jimhogg-cad.org.

The bill itself is a different stop: the Tax Assessor-Collector on E. Tilley St., where the money actually gets paid. The amount on that bill is the appraisal district's value run through the rates of every taxing unit you fall under — Jim Hogg County, Jim Hogg ISD, Jim Hogg WCID No. 2, and a county Emergency Services District. So if your number looks wrong, the argument belongs on Viggie St. with the appraisers; the payment belongs on Tilley St. Mix those up and you have driven across town to talk to people who cannot fix what you came about.
