Two small offices on Court Avenue in Fort Davis do all the property-tax work in the county, and it helps to know which is which. The Jeff Davis County Appraisal District, at 100 Court Ave., decides what your land and home are worth for tax purposes. That's the door you knock on to protest a value you think is too high, or to file for an exemption.

A block over at 105 Court Ave., the Tax Assessor-Collector mails the bills and takes your payment. In a county this small the sheriff wears that second hat too, so the lawman and the tax collector are the same person. Only two school districts levy here (Fort Davis ISD and Valentine ISD), so your bill is short by Texas standards. Protest a value at the first address; pay what you owe at the second.
