Who Sets Your Property Tax Bill in Duval County

Two doors in San Diego do two different jobs. At 100 W. Gravis St., the Duval County Appraisal District puts a value on your property every year. Over at 100 S. Bexar St., the Tax Assessor-Collector takes that value, turns it into a bill, and collects the check. Same town, different desks, and they don't trade roles.

People walk into the wrong one all the time. If you think your house or your acreage came in too high, the protest goes to the appraisal district on Gravis St. The tax office can't touch the value, only the math that follows from it. You generally have until May 1, or 30 days after your notice lands in the mailbox, whichever gives you more time. Walk it into the Gravis St. office before that window closes and you've kept your right to argue. Let it pass and the value rides for the whole year, no matter how wrong it looks to you.
