Poesta Creek Once Helped Tell Two Beevilles Apart

Poesta Creek rises four miles south of Mineral and runs southeast for twelve miles. Its upper reaches are intermittent. Two miles north of Skidmore, the creek reaches the headwaters of the Aransas River after crossing clay and sandy loams that support hardwoods and grasses.

The creek once did civic work, too. Bee County's first seat stood on Medio Creek. After the seat shifted to the present town, court minutes sometimes called the old place Beeville-on-the-Medio and the new one Beeville-on-the-Poesta.

Those were practical labels for two places sharing one town name. Today Beeville sits on Poesta Creek, while the old wording preserves the short period when a creek name told county officials which Beeville they meant.
