Olton Still Holds Lamb County's First Courthouse Corner

At the southeast corner of Main Street and 8th in Olton, a state marker stands where Lamb County's first courthouse rose. Texas created the county in 1876, but it did not organize until 1908, when it could muster 21 qualified voters. The marker also names the early officers, including Judge H. R. Miller and Sheriff Herb Dickenson.

Residents donated labor for a nine-room frame courthouse. It served until fire destroyed it in 1922. A brick-and-concrete replacement went up on the same corner in 1922 and 1923, so the site carried county business through two buildings.

A 1946 election moved the county seat to Littlefield. Olton kept the old corner. For nearly four decades, this ordinary intersection was Lamb County's government address.
