The Old Hidalgo Pumphouse Mixes Border History, Trails, and Birds
Back when the Lower Rio Grande Valley was still being carved out of brush into farmland, riverside pumping stations lifted Rio Grande water up into the canals that made citrus and vegetables possible. The Old Hidalgo Pumphouse is one of those stations, and unlike most it never fell out of public life.
The City of Hidalgo keeps the site running at 902 South 2nd Street as a museum and a stop on the World Birding Center, with history tours, hike-and-bike trails, birding, butterfly gardens, and nature tours all on the grounds.
That mix is what makes it a good county stop. In one spot near the river you can stand at the old water-works that built the farms, walk the levee trails, and tap into the Valley's famous birding network — three layers of the region's story in a single afternoon.
