Rockport's Oak Mottes Are More Than Pretty Shade

The live oaks around Rockport-Fulton are not just scenery. Places like Aransas Woods, Ivy Lane, Henderson Nature Site, and Goose Island make a chain of oak motte and wetland stops where tired migrants can land.

Aransas Woods alone has 140 acres of freshwater wetlands and live-oak uplands. Ivy Lane is smaller, 28 wooded acres off Griffith Drive, but its coastal live oak forest carries an understory of red bay, yaupon holly, wax myrtle, beautyberry, and Turk's cap. That sheltered mix is exactly the kind of cover songbirds need after crossing open water or skirting the coast.

Henderson Nature Site adds a walking trail, ponds, bird drips, benches, and a blind. Goose Island brings bay marsh and wind-shaped oaks into the same picture.

Once you know that, the county looks different from the highway. A clump of wind-bent oaks is not a shady patch behind a street. It can be a meal, a rest stop, and a safe landing place for birds moving through Texas. Rockport's birding identity starts with those ordinary-looking green pockets.
