New Resident

New to Bell County? You have 30 days to register your vehicle

Texas gives new residents 30 days from the day they move to register a vehicle they brought with them. This is a one-time setup, not the same as your yearly renewal. You handle it in person at the Tax Assessor-Collector's office for the county where you live, which for Bell County means Belton, Killeen, or Temple.

Bring proof that you own the vehicle, such as the out-of-state title, and proof of Texas liability insurance. Texas dropped the annual safety inspection for most personal vehicles in 2025, so you no longer hunt down an inspection station, but a small Inspection Program Replacement Fee is now folded into registration. Bell County is not an emissions-testing county, so you can skip that step. New residents also owe a one-time new-resident use tax on the vehicle, collected at registration.

Doing this on time keeps your plates and registration legal and avoids late penalties. Check the current document list and fees on the Bell County tax office page and at txdmv.gov before your visit, and bring a payment method, since not every office takes cash.
