Neches Bluff opens a long view over the river bottomlands

The forest opens at Neches Bluff to a long view across the Neches River bottomlands. Pine and hardwood forest spread over the lower ground, giving the north end of the Four C Trail a destination that works even for someone who does not plan to walk the full 20 miles.

The overlook also has a small primitive campground and picnic space. Sites cannot be reserved and are used in arrival order. Camping is free and limited to 14 days. There is a vault toilet but no potable water, so every visit needs its own drinking supply. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Use the live Forest Service directions for the final approach rather than relying on a copied road number.

As checked July 29, 2026, Neches Bluff itself was listed open. The active Four C alert still marked the Wilderness section at Big Slough impassable and six bridges unsafe. That distinction matters: the overlook, a night at its campground, and a through-hike are three different plans sharing one trailhead.
