Getting a Marriage License in Walker County
Both of you head to the County Clerk's office at 1100 University Avenue in Huntsville, Suite 201, and you'll want an appointment rather than a walk-in. The license runs $82, but there's a real discount built in: finish a state-approved Twogether in Texas premarital course and bring the certificate, and the fee drops to $22. The same course also waives the wait described below.
Texas builds in a 72-hour pause between picking up the license and saying your vows. Marry inside those three days without a waiver and the marriage is void and can be annulled, so it's not a technicality to shrug off. A district or county judge can sign a waiver, and active-duty military, Department of Defense employees, and couples who took the premarital course are exempt from the wait outright.
Once the license is in hand, you have 89 days to hold the ceremony before it expires. Plan a little slack — the clerk's office closes for lunch from noon to 1, so a same-afternoon dash can run into a locked door.
