Marriage License

Getting married in Starr County starts at the clerk's window in Rio Grande City

A wedding in Starr County begins at the County Clerk's window, Room 201 in the courthouse at 401 N. Britton Avenue in Rio Grande City. That office hands out the marriage license itself, the actual legal piece, and you both apply there in person. Texas runs a 72-hour waiting period after you sign before the ceremony can happen, with the usual exceptions for active military.

If one of you genuinely can't make it to the window, the clerk keeps an Affidavit of Absent Applicant on hand, which lets a stand-in complete the paperwork for the person who can't appear. There's also a separate Application for Informal Marriage License, the Texas common-law route, for couples who've already been living as married and want it on record.

Two things people forget: a Texas marriage license is good across the whole state, not just Starr County, and the certified copy you'll want later for a name change or a passport is a separate request back at this same Room 201. The clerk's line is 956-716-4800.
