Lott Started Building Before the Railroad Was Finished

A straight route from Cameron to Waco made this patch of western Falls County a natural railroad townsite. The Texas Townsite Company bought land from Captain and Mrs. George H. Gassaway in 1889. The railroad received a right-of-way, and the new town took the name of railroad president Uriah Lott.

Businesses opened while crews were still completing the San Antonio and Aransas Pass line. A post office followed, then voters incorporated Lott in November 1890. City officers were elected in December, and a school opened that year. The townsite company also donated land for churches. Several denominations organized, and Lott formed a volunteer fire department in 1895. The town and the track grew up together.
