Levelland's Mosaics Turn Local Memory into a Citywide Map

Don Stroud made Levelland's Wild Mustangs mosaic in 1968. He brought its glass tiles from Mexico, and local schoolchildren helped him install it. That piece began a civic habit that kept growing long after one wall was done.

In 2019, Texas lawmakers named Levelland the City of Mosaics. The live city directory now reaches No. 102 and includes work dated 2024. This is not one old downtown art project. It is a collection built across many years and many parts of town.

Cotton bolls, oilfields, school mascots, music, county history, and nearby towns all appear in the art. Some pieces mark public buildings. Others turn a plain wall into a small piece of local memory. Generations, Way to the West, and Blooms to Bolls are among the named stops. Their titles turn broad themes into places you can find.
