Big Blue Creek cuts Moore County into canyon country

Across much of Moore County, the High Plains spread in broad, gently rolling prairie. Big Blue Creek begins differently. Shallow draws gather water in the southeast part of the county, then springs add flow as the creek cuts into deeper ground.

That descent points toward the Canadian River Breaks and the part of Lake Meredith that reaches Moore County. The Canadian River carved through more than 200 feet of rock. Red and white layers in the canyon walls date back roughly 260 million years.

The change in height also changes the living country. Around Lake Meredith, seven habitats meet: high grasslands, breaks, wetlands, marsh, riparian ground, lakeshore, and the lake. One stretch can move from dry upland grass to a sheltered cove. Big Blue Creek gives Moore County a visible, deeply cut edge. The county is not one unbroken tabletop; water has been working on its southeast corner for a very long time. Prairie draws gather into running water, the ground opens, and the flat-looking Panhandle turns into canyon country.
