Lake Cypress Springs Makes Franklin County Feel Like Water, Not Just Woods

Lake Cypress Springs changes the feel of Franklin County in a hurry. South of Mount Vernon, the county picture widens past courthouse square, farm road, and timber edge. The water opens into shallow bays with pines close enough to throw shade on the view.

TPWD's wildlife trail points birders toward Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Wood Ducks, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, Pine Warblers, and Brown-headed Nuthatches around the lake. Winter changes the scene again, with ducks, American White Pelicans, and Bald Eagles using the tall pines along the shore.

The fishing page backs up the public-water side of the story too. TPWD lists Lake Cypress Springs as a 3,461-acre reservoir on Cypress Creek, with public access parks around the shoreline. That makes the lake easy to understand as both habitat and civic geography.

For Franklin County, the lake is more than a fishing-and-boating stop. It is one of the places where Piney Woods identity meets open water. The county has old road history and small farming communities, but Lake Cypress Springs gives it a broad, bright outdoor room too.
