King William Anchored San Antonio's Local Historic District System

King William helps explain why preservation is so visible in parts of central San Antonio. The city's Office of Historic Preservation says San Antonio created its first local historic district, King William, in May 1968.

That same 1968 action created the first Board of Review, which later became today's Historic and Design Review Commission. In plain English, this neighborhood is tied to the local rules and review process that still shape changes to designated historic places across the city.

For buyers, renters, and old-house fans, that context matters. A historic district can make a neighborhood feel distinctive, but it can also mean exterior changes need city review. Use the Office of Historic Preservation as the official starting point before assuming what is allowed.
