Homestead Exemption Practical

Homestead Exemption Can Lower Your Tax Bill

The general homestead exemption removes part of your home's value from the school district tax, which lowers your annual bill. You must own the home and live in it as your main residence, and you can only claim one homestead in Texas. Once you file you do not reapply each year unless the appraisal district asks you to.

All of this is filed locally with the Wichita Appraisal District, not the tax office that mails your bill. Submit the form at wadtx.com or call the district directly at (940) 322-2435 with eligibility questions; there is no filing fee. Homeowners 65 and older get an extra deduction and a school-tax ceiling, and veterans with a 100% disability rating may qualify for a full exemption.
