You Can Renew Your Car Tags at the Grocery Store in Galveston County

If your renewal is the ordinary kind (current insurance, no plate problems, nothing weird) you can knock it out at a grocery store instead of standing in line at the tax office. The county runs courtesy booths inside the Kroger at 5730 Seawall Boulevard in Galveston, the Kroger at 151 N. Friendswood Drive in Friendswood, and the Randall's at 2951 Marina Bay Drive in League City. Bring the renewal notice the state mailed you and you can pay right there.

The booths run 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., which is the real draw: longer hours than any county window keeps, and you're already pushing a cart. They only handle renewals, though. A title transfer, a lost plate, a new registration, or anything tangled still has to go through a tax office counter — the courthouse at 722 Moody in Galveston, or the annexes in League City, Texas City, and Santa Fe.

If your sticker's about to lapse and you forgot the paper notice, you can still renew online or at any office. The grocery booth is the convenience play for the simple cases, not a fix for a complicated one.
