Fire Code

Big Builds Outside Town Still Get a Fire Code Review

It's a common assumption that once you're outside Sinton or Portland city limits, you can build whatever you want with nobody looking over your shoulder. Mostly true for a barn on your own acreage. But the county adopted a Fire Code in 2022 that reaches the buildings the public actually walks into: commercial establishments, public buildings, larger multifamily housing, and county-owned structures in the unincorporated areas.

The County Fire Marshal administers it. That's Scott Marion, working out of 313 N. Rachal in Sinton at (361) 587-3558, and his office issues the required permits, runs inspections, and keeps the records. A shop building or an apartment block gets real scrutiny on things like exits, alarms, and fire-lane access.

If you're early in designing one of those projects, a call to the Fire Marshal before the plans are finished is far cheaper than a red tag after the slab is poured. And if the land turns out to sit inside a city's limits after all, you'll be dealing with that city's building and fire rules instead, so it pays to pin that down before you break ground.
