Ennis turns country roads into a bluebonnet map each April

April gives the Ennis side of Ellis County its loudest color. In 1997, the Texas Legislature named Ennis the home of the Official Texas Bluebonnet Trail and the Official Bluebonnet City of Texas. The annual trail maps more than 40 miles of driving routes from April 1 through April 30.

The scale is what sets the tradition apart. This is not one flower bed or one fenced festival ground. The route spreads across ordinary roads around Ennis, turning bends, field edges, and long views through the county into the attraction. The Ennis Garden Club sponsors the trail, tying a statewide title to local work each spring.

A ceremonial name can feel distant until a map puts it on the road. Here, the flowers are the draw, but the drive is part of the memory: choosing a route, watching the roadside change, and seeing Ennis beyond one downtown block. For one month, more than 40 miles of local roads become a public flower route.
