Edinburg's 1910 Jail Marks the County-Seat Move
The old jail at 121 East McIntyre in Edinburg is a physical record of the county-seat move. The Texas Historical Commission marker says it was erected in 1909-1910, right after the seat shifted from Old Hidalgo to Edinburg in 1908, with red tile, white walls, and Spanish-style detailing.
It was a working jail with a hard edge: the marker notes a hanging trap in the tower that was used only once, in 1913. After a newer jail opened in 1922, the building moved on to gentler work as a community center and meeting place, then city hall.
Today the building anchors downtown Edinburg as a museum. It is a tidy example of how a Valley civic building can change jobs several times and still hold onto local meaning.
