Early Keeps the East-Bank Side of Brownwood's Story

Early is not just the town you pass on U.S. 67 and 84 east of Brownwood. It sits on Pecan Bayou where part of Brownwood's own start took place. Welcome W. Chandler settled the area in the early 1850s, and Brown County's 1858 post office was established in Chandler's home.

For a while, the east side of Pecan Bayou and Brownwood were tangled together. TSHA records that a disputed land title and water-supply trouble pushed many Brownwood residents west across the bayou around 1869. People kept living on the east side, but it did not really stand apart as its own community until much later.

The modern name came through school life. In 1928, a new school district was named for Walter U. Early, an attorney who donated land for several school buildings. Early incorporated on December 15, 1951, with about 600 people. That is a plain local origin story: bayou crossing, school land, then city hall. It also explains why Brownwood and Early can feel separate on paper but closely joined on the ground.
