Dudney Nature Center Keeps 148 Acres of Clear Creek Wetland Wild

Tucked behind the subdivisions at 1220 Egret Bay Boulevard North in League City, the Dr. Ned and Fay Dudney Nature Center is 148 acres of the kind of Clear Creek wetland that most of this corner of the county got paved over. A 1.3-mile loop of concrete and fly-ash trail runs through it past bird blinds, an isolated pond, and marsh that drains toward Galveston Bay.

It's a birder's place above all. Herons, egrets, ibises, and owls work the water year-round, and in winter sandhill cranes drop in. The wetland doubles as a nursery for bay fish and cover for deer, bobcat, coyote, and raccoon, so the trail rarely feels empty even on a quiet morning.

The gate's open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and there are picnic tables, grills, and a covered pavilion if you want to make a morning of it. It's the reason the county's built-up north side still has a piece of wild Clear Creek you can walk into.
