Disabled Veteran Tax Breaks Are Filed at the Pulliam Street CAD

San Angelo is a Goodfellow Air Force Base town, so disabled-veteran exemptions come up a lot here. How much you get scales with your VA rating: a 10-29% rating takes up to $5,000 off your taxable value, 30-49% up to $7,500, 50-69% up to $10,000, and 70-100% up to $12,000. A veteran 65 or older with at least a 10% rating, or one who's lost the use of a limb or is totally blind, can also reach the $12,000 tier.

The big one is the 100% exemption under Tax Code Section 11.131: a veteran rated 100% disabled or deemed unemployable pays no property tax on their homestead at all. That same full exemption can pass to an unmarried surviving spouse, and spouses of service members killed in the line of duty have their own total exemption.

Every one of these is an appraisal-district filing, not a payment question for the tax office. You take the Comptroller's exemption form, plus your VA disability award letter, to the Tom Green County Appraisal District at 2302 Pulliam St. The CAD's own site links straight to the current Comptroller forms; if your rating just changed, call them at 325-658-5575 to make sure you're on the right tier before the next bill prints.
