Disabled Veteran Tax Exemptions: File With the Appraisal District, Not the Tax Office

Coryell County sends a steady stream of soldiers into civilian life from Fort Hood, now Fort Cavazos, and many settle right here in Gatesville and Copperas Cove. For veterans with a service-connected disability rating, Texas knocks a chunk off the property tax bill, and a 100% disabled veteran or surviving spouse can have the homestead fully exempted.

Here's where people end up at the wrong window: the break is granted by the Coryell Central Appraisal District, not the tax collector. The CAD has the disabled-veteran application, Form 50-135, and the residence homestead form on its forms page. The county tax office will hand you a form if you ask, but it sends every exemption question right back to the appraisal district by affidavit.

Have your VA disability rating letter ready when you file; the percentage on it sets the size of the exemption. The appraisal district answers exemption questions at 254-865-6593, and for the full-homestead 100% rules they'll point you to the Comptroller's plain-language guide.
