Veteran Exemption Practical

Veterans with Disabilities Get a Property Tax Break

Texas has two main tax breaks for disabled veterans. One is a partial exemption on one property the veteran owns. The amount is tied to the veteran's VA disability rating. The other can fully exempt the veteran's home. For that break, the VA must pay benefits at the 100% service-connected rate. It must also rate the veteran as 100% disabled or as individually unemployable.

Apply through DCAD at 214-631-0910. DCAD checks the property and the veteran's records. Some surviving spouses and children can qualify under their own rules, but the break does not pass to them on its own. The Comptroller's page has the current forms and helps show which path may fit.
