County Preserves
Dallas County Has Its Own Preserve System
Beyond the city parks, Dallas County runs its own network of nature preserves. The county's Parks and Open Space Program lists 21 preserves totaling 4,166 acres, spread from Garland down to Cedar Hill and the south county.
It is an older program than many people realize. Dallas County voters approved a $2 million bond in 1977 to buy parkland, and the 1980 Open Space Plan formally created the program. These preserves are where you find hiking, biking, kayaking, and quiet creek-bottom woods that the busier city parks do not offer.
When you are looking for one, start with the Dallas County Parks and Open Space page. It links to the county locator map and gives the official contact for rules, maintenance, and access questions.
