In Cuero, the Birding Trail Runs Along Fence Lines

Cuero's stop on the Texas Coastal Birding Trail does not begin at a tower or boardwalk. Site CTC 028 starts at the DeWitt Historical Museum, 312 East Broadway. The DeWitt County Wildflower Association keeps spring viewing information there. The stop is open for day use. That address gives the route a town doorway before it opens onto county roads.

Winter moves the route out to the grasslands. Sparrows gather in the region, and roadside birding is the normal way to see them. Fence lines and hedgerows along the backroads become habitat edges. The directions spread the outing across roadside grass, wire, shrubs, and the open space beyond. A car window and a quiet shoulder become part of how this landscape is read.

The same stop reads DeWitt County in two seasons. Spring puts color close to the ground. Winter puts movement along the fences. Museum information begins the outing, but the lasting scene is quieter: a pasture road and a nearby hedgerow carrying winter movement where spring color had been.
