Groveton's 1914 Courthouse Was Built Around an Older Vault

Trinity County learned hard lessons about keeping records. Three earlier courthouses burned. District court records were stolen in 1880 and never recovered. By the early 1900s, the 1884 courthouse was unstable and the county worried about its records. In 1908, it built a freestanding vault beside the courthouse.

When C. H. Page and Brother designed the 1914 courthouse, they started with that vault. Rather than tear it down, they incorporated it into the new building. They added a three-story center block, a classical portico, and a double-height district courtroom. A matching west wing made the old vault part of the courthouse's long, balanced shape.

The courthouse faced fire in 2006, when a blaze in the County Clerk's office nearly destroyed it and rallied support for restoration. Crews cleaned and repointed masonry, replaced damaged roof details, restored windows, and brought the courtroom closer to its historic arrangement. The 1908 vault remained inside: the room built to protect the county's papers became part of the courthouse built around it.
