Paddling Stories & local character

Galveston County Has Coastal Paddling Trails on the Bay and Bayous

The bay side of Galveston Island State Park has three paddle loops with different personalities. Jenkins Bayou stays close to shorebird habitat. Oak Bayou reaches secluded water and restored marsh. Dana Cove crosses broad open water over former seagrass beds.

TPWD rates Jenkins and Dana Cove moderate and Oak Bayou challenging. Current trail listings put the round trips at about 3.3, 2.8, and 5.4 miles. Distances help with planning, but wind and tide can matter more than the number.

Check the park alert, marine weather, tide, and boat traffic before launching. Wear a life jacket and leave a route plan. The bay can look gentle from shore and feel very different once the wind has room to work.
