Buna's old tram road tied the pines to the Neches

Buna sits where FM 253, FM 1004, U.S. 96, and State Highway 62 come together in south central Jasper County. Before the name Buna stuck, the Beaumont Lumber Company mill site was called Carrolla. The later name honored Buna Corley, a cousin of the Carroll family.

The useful mental map is not a modern highway map. By 1890, Beaumont Lumber had built a tram road from Buna to Ford's Bluff on the Neches River. John Henry Kirby later bought that ten-mile line and, by 1896, turned it into a common carrier reaching toward Beaumont and Roganville. In 1902 the Orange and Northwestern Railway linked Buna with Orange, which made the logging town less isolated and more tied into the wider timber economy.

That helps explain why Buna feels different from a courthouse town. Its story runs through mills, tram lines, rail crossings, and second-growth timber. Oilfields west and north of Buna added another layer after their 1948 discovery, but the place still reads like a south Jasper County timber crossroads.
