Bob Wills Was Born Near Kosse Before the Music Took Shape

James Robert 'Bob' Wills was born near Kosse on March 6, 1905. He was one of ten children. His family left Limestone County in 1913 and settled on the Ogden Ranch between Memphis and Estelline in Hall County.

Wills learned frontier fiddle music from his father and grandfather. In Hall County he learned violin and made his dance debut in 1915. He went on to play ranch dances across West Texas for fourteen years.

His musical education crossed communities. Wills learned blues and jazz from Black playmates and coworkers in cotton fields in East and West Texas, adding those forms to the fiddle music taught inside his family.

The 1940 recording of 'New San Antonio Rose' made Wills a national popular-music figure and helped establish him as a western swing pioneer. That order matters for Limestone County. Kosse marks his birthplace, but the sound took shape later across other Texas places and among musicians who taught, played, and listened to one another. The birthplace is one part of a wider musical geography.
