Big Creek Is a Quiet Forest Walk Near Shepherd

Big Creek Scenic Area sits about six miles west of Shepherd, with parking off Forest Service Road 217. The Forest Service describes it as 1,420 acres known for vegetative diversity and scenic quality, which is a formal way of saying the place changes under your feet instead of feeling like one repeated trail scene.

Getting there gives you a small tour of the county's forest roads. The Forest Service route from New Waverly follows SH 150 east, turns onto FM 2025 and FM 2666, then uses Forest Service roads 221 and 217 to reach the trailhead. Those road names are part of the place; Big Creek is not hidden, but it is not sitting on the courthouse square either.

This is a hiking place, not a campground. The Lone Star Hiking Trail runs through the scenic area, and four loops give walkers different lengths to choose from. No camping is allowed inside Big Creek Scenic Area, so it works well as a quiet morning or afternoon in the woods.
