Beeville moved from Medio Creek to Poesta Creek

Bee County's first commissioners met on the bank of Medio Creek in 1858. The county seat stood there, about seven miles east of present-day Beeville, and became known as Beeville-on-the-Medio.

The location proved inconvenient. In 1859 Ann Burke Carroll, Patrick Carroll, and Patrick Burke donated land for a townsite at the present location on Poesta Creek. The new community was first called Maryville. Eight months later, county commissioners changed its name to Beeville, and the county seat moved there in 1860.

For a while, court minutes used Beeville-on-the-Medio and Beeville-on-the-Poesta to keep the two sites straight. The paired creek names preserve a civic move that the modern map no longer makes obvious.
