Old Bankhead Highway Still Runs Through Mount Vernon's Story

Main Street in Mount Vernon has more road history than a quick drive on U.S. 67 lets on. The Bankhead Highway crossed Texas from Texarkana to El Paso, and Mount Vernon was one of the places on that old route.

In smaller Texas communities, the Bankhead often ran through Main Street business districts. That fits Mount Vernon cleanly. The courthouse square, the old highway path, and the mid-1900s auto buildings belong to the same layer of local life: people stopping for fuel, repairs, lunch, court business, or a room before moving on.

The Texas Historical Commission describes the Bankhead as an early transcontinental highway, with a Texas route that roughly followed U.S. 67 and U.S. 80. It also names Mount Vernon as one of the smaller communities where road-era business pieces still help tell the story.

Franklin County can feel quiet on a map, but the Bankhead story shows it was tied into a larger Texas road line before the interstate made travel faster and less local. When you see Main Street as an older highway street, the square starts to read differently. It is courthouse country, yes, but also road country.
