Where a DBA Goes Depends on the Business Type

The DBA route depends on how the business is set up. A sole owner or general partnership files with the county clerk in each county where it keeps a business office. With no Texas office, it files in each county where it does business.

Austin County keeps its Assumed Name (DBA) and Abandonment of Assumed Name forms on the County Clerk page. The office is at 265 N. Chesley Street, Suite 7, in Bellville. Ask the clerk about the current fee and signing requirements before filing.

Corporations, LLCs, limited partnerships, and other state-filed entities use the Secretary of State. They do not also file at the county level. A DBA tells the public which business uses a name. It does not reserve that name or stop someone else from filing it.
